Challenge
Most people learn to surf by being thrown into the water and hoping for the best. They arrive without knowing the parts of their board, how to read a break, or the unwritten rules of sharing a wave, which makes the first sessions both less safe and less enjoyable. Instructors also start from scratch with every new student, because there is no record of what someone already knows. I wanted to design a way to build real confidence on land first.
Solution
A five unit course that moves in the order a beginner needs it: knowing your board, water safety, reading the ocean, paddling and etiquette, then standing up. Mara, a coach character, speaks to you throughout, as if she were next to you in the water. Interactive diagrams make the board and the wave types tangible, and a short knowledge check closes each unit with explanations when you get something wrong. Finishing the course earns a surf passport and collectible badges, giving instructors a shareable record of what a new surfer has covered.
